Don't compare yourself to others...

I have a tendency to forget how far I've come in my fitness and weight loss.  I compare myself to friends who were fitter to start with and get annoyed that I can't keep up with them. So this weekend I'm reminding myself how far I've come and what I can now do that I couldn't before I started this fitness programme.

I've lost 32 lbs and I've gone down 3 dresses sizes in jeans.

On the fitness side, I've improved constantly:

Before                                                                Now
ran 1.17 kms in 12 mins                                     ran 1.55 kms in 12 mins
hold a plank for 22 seconds                               hold a plank 52 seconds
can do 22 press ups                                            can do 30 press ups (before collapsing)
can hold a squat position for 36 seconds           can hold a squat position for 1m 47 seconds

Now I go running on a treadmill without a trainer frogmarching me to the gym. I go there voluntarily at the weekend and run/walk until I've covered 5km!! That is so far removed from the me of last March who only swam for exercise.

I remember the first fitness test with Gareth where I broke it to him that I couldn't run. Never had been able to. I was so convinced that running/jogging was beyond me that I just laughed when he suggested that I could turn the treadmill up from a walk to a run. That is so not going to happen but I let him think that it might. Just nod, Claire. Nod and smile. Yes, yes crazy man. But now I do run and (sometimes) enjoy it.

So in the first few months of 2013, I'm going to turn that 32lbs into 50lbs lost (at least) and hopefully with continued support from Gareth and Lottie, I will be achieving even more at each fitness test.

My not-New-Years-Resolutions:

  • Continue losing weight each month
  • Improve my fitness each month so that I can run a 5k comfortably in the second half of this year ( Lottie has changed this to a 5k in the first 6 months and a 10k in the second half of 2013 - eek!)
  • Write a blog post each week
  • Cook a new (to me) healthy dinner once a week to bring in some variety

And from my Life List for 2013, I'm keen to get on with fixing up my singing lessons. Especially after seeing Les Miserables today. It's fantastic. I cried. Like. Quite a bit. But mostly I had to restrain myself from singing along! I need me some singing fun.
